I am an excellent one-handed typist

Sometimes when I'm done feeding the baby and I'm half delirious I start writing terribly eloquent posts in my head. I so wanted to sit and write something profound in honor of Mother's Day, but the baby hasn't pooped since we took him home from the hospital (Phillip wants to know what you all think about that btw, he wants to harness the power of the internet) and we've been soothing an upset gassy baby all night. But this is fun. I know sometime in the next few days the novelty will wear off and I'll get really tired and cranky, but right now all of it is so fun. Even the hard and scary parts, which so far have not been that hard or scary. I cry a lot, but 90% of the time it's because he's looking up at me all content-like and I don't think I have ever been so happy.

Right now he is watching the little letters pop up on the screen as I type. Our little computer nerd.

Anyway I hope you'll stick around even if it takes me a while to write the profound stuff (which, I'm sure you're well aware, will probably be the exact opposite.)

Happy mother's day!!! I wouldn't worry too much about the not pooping thing, especially if you're breastfeeding. Every baby is different, but I'm pretty sure nursing babies don't always do it every day. My mother swears my brother only had dirty diapers 2-3 times a week when she nursed him.
Again, happy mother's day!! When your talking poo, you know you're a mom.

Yay! I kept checking back with hopes that you'd update. Your baby burrito does look quite delicious and it sounds like you're doing great! Happy Mothers Day!

Oh he is just the most adorable little baby burrito evah! Happpy Mother's Day! :-)
No idea on the poop... honestly don't remember at all, sorry. But don't be afraid to call a nurse line or your doctor's office... every new parent has odd little questions and how do you learn if you don't ask?
Congratulations again, I'm so happy for you.

I think that E.'s comment about breast fed babies is right for the long term, but not for the short. It isn't until later in the game that it becomes no big deal for breast fed babies to go days/a week without pooping. In the baby's first few days, the pooping is/should be more frequent than it will eventually be, because the baby needs to poop out the meconium to avoid developing jaundice. Frequent pooping is also a sign that the breastfeeding is starting to work/go well, which in turn is an indicator that the baby is getting the nutrition he needs to thrive. Many babies, even breast fed babies, go through a phase during which they poop every time they feed due to the gastro-colic reflex. For what it's worth, I suspect Jackson will soon be pooping up a storm, but I second the recommendation to feel free to bother your doctor with concerns like this. It can be hard to remain calm and trust your instincts when you're in the thick of post-partum hormones. Oh, and congratulations!

    Maggie,
I haven't posted in so long that you probably don't remember me, BUT I still have to pop in to say Congratulations to you and Phillip. I cannot wait until you're able to post all the details of his big entrance into the world.

My son went for a no-pooping phase of 9 days when he was 2 months old. I definitely thought it was a BIG deal, as evidenced by my 2 billion calls to the ped nurse who told me it was not uncommon. At one point I sobbed into the phone that "...normally something like this would not be upsetting, but this is MY baby who isn't pooping and it really seems like a very big deal". 10 minutes after that phone call he pooped more poop than I could have ever imagined his bowels could hold. I say call the doc and see what s/he says.

My best to you during this babymoon!

    So...Much...Cuteness!!

I really wish I had something helpful to add to the pooping discussion, but really my only expertise in that subject would be on the topic of How To Make Your Cat Stop Pooping In The Tub.

So tiny & adorable. Love it.

I love the burrito baby --- adorable!!! He is so precious!

As far as the pooping thing, if he doesn't start soon, I'd just put in a quick call to the Ped, and ask their opinion.

Frequent pooping at first is an indication that their digestive system is working properly, and they are getting adequate milk.

It is common for them later to go for days and days without pooping when they are breastfed, but that is a couple of months down the road when that kicks in.

I wouldn't panic, but I would call if he doesn't start soon, just to get some reassurance.

    Good luck -- he's gorgeous!

I echo the suggestions to call the doctor. We called Jack's doctor for the exact same problem. A few times, now, actually. But the first time was about 5 days after we got home or something, and they suggested stimulating with a thermometer. It didn't work that time, but a few weeks later when we thought he had a temp we tried to take it and... WOAH. PROJECTILE POOP. He cleared the little raised portion of the combi-dresser and I was finding poop CLEAR ACROSS THE ROOM five feet away for days. So you can try taking his temperature. But wear goggles. ;)

I'm sure he's fine, btw, but never hesitate to call the doctor if you're nervous. They're used to it, and that's what they're there for.

I've just found you by floowing the link from Arwen. I just wanted to say congratulations on your beautiful baby.

From the mom of one Jackson to another...he's beautiful! Congrats and happy Mother's Day.

what a handsome fellow. and how wonderful to read you sounding so happy! (c:

unfortunately, i have zero to contribute to the poop discussion. but now i'll know who to ask someday if/when!!

What a cutie burrito he is. Nothing to add to the poop discussion but it is funny that it is always a concern. Even when we got Annslee at 13 months we had to hold our breath for that first poop..don't really know why?? I just know our coordinator kept asking if the babies had pooped yet..LOL

Hey, I'm not going anywhere! Even if the posts turn out to be incoherent, I'll still be reading.

    What a yummy baby!

    Sweet as sweet can be!!

    And don't worry--profound is completely overrated ;)
